Murau is a town in the Austrian region of Styria and lies on the river Mur. It is one of the larger and more important towns, historically above all during the Second World War. The Kreischberg/Murau ski resort lies close by, at the village of Kreischberg.
Winter:
Kreischberg/Murau suits most skiers, because the pistes here strike an ideal balance across all difficulties and total 42 km. The resort is also notable for its own attractions: a ghost trail, a dinosaur forest and a safari, which children are certainly not the only ones to enjoy. There is also a snow park for beginner and advanced skiers and for freeriders.
Summer:
In summer you can enjoy the historic side of the town and the countryside around it. Murau is known as the town of wood, and the craft is on show in the centre. You can also visit the baroque Obermurau castle, today owned by the Schwarzenbergs, or several medieval churches. You can set out on one of the walks near Kreischberg, or enjoy the wellness facilities.
Thanks to its size, this area too offers varied accommodation from Pensionen to wellness hotels, so everyone can find the right one. Austrian and Italian specialities are served in the town itself and on the slopes as well, for example at the Murauerhutte mountain hut.
Accommodation in the area
In the Murau region you can stay in hotels, Ferienwohnungen, on farms and at campsites; staffed Berghütten round out the offer.
The tourist board sorts accommodation into certified groups: golf businesses, farm holidays, nature-park partners, certified hosts for hikers, accommodation with the Austrian Ecolabel, and businesses in the Murau GästeCard scheme. The card is valid from 1 May to 2 November 2026, has over 25 partners with services included and more than 30 bonus partners.
Typical food in the area
Murau's regional products are Murauer Bier, the stone-pine schnapps Zirbenschnaps, Steirerkäs, honey, fish and Zirbitzlamm lamb. Murtaler Steirerkäs is a sour milk product from the upper Murtal.
Brauerei Murau is one of the five largest breweries in Austria and brews about 275,000 hectolitres of beer a year; brewing here is documented from 1495. Murau was raised to the status of a beer town in 2010, and since 2016 the brewery has brewed CO2-neutrally.
Game is traditionally served with red cabbage and dumplings, and the fish come from the Schwarzenberg farm.
